Manafort is the former chairman of US President Donald Trump’s campaign and the defendant in two criminal indictments from the special counsel Robert Mueller. Mueller is investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election and whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to sway the race in Trump’s favor. Gates is the government’s star witness in the criminal trial against Manafort, which is taking place in the Eastern District of Virginia.
