SINGAPORE — A U.S. ambassador has given North Korea’s top diplomat a letter from President Trump to Kim Jong Un at a conference of Southeast Asia nations, the State Department said Saturday. According to an account given by State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, U.S. ambassador Sung Kim, traveling with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, gave the letter from President Trump, in a white envelope, to North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho immediately after Ri and Pompeo shook hands and returned to their seats at a group photo during an ASEAN summit in Singapore. Nauert said Pompeo told Ri, “We should talk again soon,” and Ri replied in fluent English, “I agree. There are many productive conversations to be had.” Nauert said that, beyond the brief exchange at the group photo, Pompeo and Ri did not have a more formal meeting. Given where the US and North Korea were a year ago, Nauert said, “This is a step in the right direction.” Pompeo, who was leaving to fly to Jakarta, was not present in the room afterward, when North Korea delivered a fiery response to remarks Pompeo gave earlier. U.S. representatives were present. Before the photo op, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had expressed concern that Russia may be violating sanctions against North Korea, as he urged all governments to keep up the economic pressure on Pyongyang until it has completely abandoned its nuclear weapons program.
